I have a former classmate/former friend of mine who talked about seeds in his books. (This is free: I say “former” because it’s just another reminder not to do business with your friends. Multiple examples…) I have thought about seeds quite a bit lately. My kids grew up on Veggie Tales. They had one about a weed that got out of control. Well, since we’ve been in Tennessee, we’ve become acquainted with crabgrass, which gets out of control.
If we think of trees like positive seeds and weeds like negative seeds. Isn’t it interesting weeds just tend to grow, no problem? Listen, we don’t cultivate crabgrass. It just grows. We’ve tried multiple things, including digging them out, to no avail. They keep coming back like a bad Hollywood sequel!
Now, if we consider seeds like thoughts, you can perhaps see where I’m going. I’ve written on this stuff before, but it’s worth revisiting. The weeds tend to grow the easiest. I’m not entirely sure why that is, but we sure seem to be wired that way, but we gravitate toward negative so much so that it becomes a habit.
This is crabgrass seeds. Note the sheer amount! Every time we cut the grass, it slings those seeds out, and guess what happens? More grows! I don’t know all of this scientifically; however, I can tell you from experience that crabgrass loves hot and dry. It has no problem multiplying. It lives when other stuff wants to die. When you look at the number seeds, it’s easy to understand how fighting this stuff is difficult.
Negative thoughts are similar.
Check out the mighty Sequoia seeds! Isn’t it wild they start out that small? They’re resilient. Everything we see around us started with a thought.
We are left with a choice: We can focus on the weeds or care for the trees. It is so important, perhaps now more than ever, to focus on the good, the positive. Weeds have no problem growing; they’re weeds. Negative thoughts are like that. We still get to choose whether we tend to it mentally or not. It’s natural to want to do so, maybe even habitual. But, we can change those habits. We have to create a new habit to focus on the trees, the positive. Maybe we start with gratitude. Maybe we start with the breaths we take (deep, slow in through the nose, deeper, slower out through the mouth).Maybe we take time to look up from whatever device you’re reading this on and look at the trees, the flowers, the mountains, or streams. There’s beauty everywhere. The Bible says if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can move mountains. Tiny habits work like that.
Refocus on the trees, my friends.
