I watched The X-files growing up. I’ve watched it off and on, and I definitely have my favorites. I’ve probably mentioned being afraid of two things growing up: the devil and Bigfoot. Recently, I’ve grown interested in hearing stories about these things from a Biblical perspective. There are really some fascinating stories and amazing storytellers out there. It’s almost like the Bible in that there are two camps: believers and nonbelievers.
We live in an era of misinformation from reportedly trustworthy places. Growing up, I did not worry about news being fake. If it were reported, chances are the story was consistent across the networks. When networks started 24 hour televised programs (music, sports, news, etc.), maybe that shifted things. Maybe that shifted things from truth to ratings. I don’t know.
For me, these stories are pretty interesting. Stories have been integral to civilizations. It’s a way of communicating. It’s a way of warning. It’s entertainment. It serves quite a few purposes. I remember hearing stories about a wildcat running down our road, screaming like a woman in our neighborhood. I remember hearing stories about a “booger” going to get me.
Fear? Manipulation? Behavior modification? Legit warnings?
Maybe for some, it’s all of the above.
And for some, the story of Jesus is just that, a story.
For others, like me, Jesus represents the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). When life seems and feels so chaotic, when news is manipulated, and when truth is altered, it helps me knowing there is a truth that does not change, a truth I can lean into for stability.
You know what that does? It takes some fear, worry, and paranoia away. I could easily be (and have been) more anxious. I can be more fearful. I can catastrophize with the best of folks. In fact, I often joke about it being a superpower I have.
As I listen to these amazing stories, legends, folktales, myths, etc., I don’t really have to worry about personally their basis in fact. I take it and put it through the Biblical lens I have and see where it fits. At the least, I go away often entertained. At the most, I grow and learn.
Yes, Mulder, the truth is out there. For me, that truth is based on Jesus Christ. If you’d like to learn more about salvation, click here.
